A truck driver present on the scene recorded the bus, carrying students and staff from Waggener High School in Louisville, crashing into the divider on I-64 in Kentucky. WKYT reports that the bus crossed three lanes of traffic before hitting the divider. A blown tire is thought to have caused the bus to sharply swerve, ultimately leading to the crash
A spokesman for the Jefferson County School system indicated that each of the 42 passengers was hospitalized. Injuries ranged from fair to serious, although none were life threatening
WDRB reports that Brendan O’Hern, a student, woke up from a nap just as the wheels of the bus dropped and saw students tossed across the bus aisle. “I couldn’t breathe, I was thinking, ‘I could die right here on this bus’,” he said. “When we started swerving, I saw the median coming and my first thought was, ‘OK, we are either going to hit it or flip over’.”
O’Hern said that he only had the wind knocked out of him, while his friend was bloodied after the crash.
