JC Penney Drop-Side Cribs recalled for suffocation risk

Back in June, I told you about a major recall involving drop-side cribs. That particular recall involved as many as 2 million units from various companies. Now comes word of yet another recall involving the same type of crib. This time, it’s the “Alexander Designs” brand drop-side cribs. This brand is sold exclusively through JC Penney.

The main reason for this latest recall, as well as the huge recall back in June, is due to the chance of suffocation and/or the risk of falls. This is a voluntary recall and affects more than 11,000 units.

The Problem

The problem with these cribs stems from the unit’s hardware. The hardware can actually break or come apart from the crib and when this occurs, a dangerous open space is made. Besides the chance of parts of the crib breaking and creating a gap, there is also a chance that an infant can get caught in that open area. If this occurs, a baby runs the risk of suffocation or being strangled.

The cribs are manufactured by a company called Jardine Enterprises Ltd, but were actually made in China. Other models made by this company were also involved in the big drop-side crib recall back in June.

Incidents

According to the CPSC, it has received notice of a couple of incidents involving this particular brand of drop-side cribs. One was actually put together in error. In that case, plastic hardware broke, causing the crib to fall. Another example involved a parts failure, which forced the rail to come apart from the crib, but no children were injured.

Dates the products were sold

The drop-side cribs were sold through JCPenney catalogs, as well as online at JCPenney.com from March 2003 through April 2007. The cribs retailed for about $200.

What Parents and Caregivers Should Do

Consumers are urged to refrain from using these recalled products should stop and also make sure they are not using them, especially if they were purchased through a second-hand party.
