Before your child goes to daycare or school, be sure to check the water bottle in their backpack or lunchbox: Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles have been recalled because of a “potential choking hazard”.
On August 27, Contigo, in conjunction with The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has voluntarily recalled about 5.7 million water bottles after receiving 149 reports of the spout coming off unexpectedly. According to the CPSC recall announcement, 18 spouts were found in children’s mouths. “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles, take them away from children and contact Contigo for inspection instructions and a free replacement lid,” states the recall notice.
The Contigo recall announcement says that you can order a free replacement lid if you purchased a Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottle from April 2018 through June 2019. If your child has been injured, however, you may want to keep the bottle and contact an attorney. On its Facebook page, Contigo says it “puts safety and quality first…We sincerely apologize to our consumers for the inconvenience. Child safety is of the utmost importance to Contigo® and we have worked quickly to correct this issue and provide a solution.”

Contigo Bottles Recalled
To date, “no injuries have been reported” but “out of an abundance of caution,” the company has urged consumers to see if their water bottle lid is affected, according to Contigo.
Contigo’s water bottles, which were made in China, were sold nationwide to retailers, including Costco, Target and Walmart. About 157,000 bottles were sold in Canada and approximately 28,000 sold in Mexico. They were also sold online. The bottles were sold in singles, two-packs and three-packs in three sizes (13, 14 and 20 ounce) and four colors (solid, graphics, stainless steel and stainless steel solid). The word “Contigo” is printed on the rim and near the bottom at the front of the bottle. All of the recalled models ONLY have a black spout base and black spout cover.
